The novel is told from the view point of Bailey, a transsexual child. Every night Bailey dreams of dresses but when she tells her parents of her wishes to wear dresses they yell at her, saying she's a boy and so she shouldn't think about wearing dresses. Her older brother calls her "gross" and threatens to hurt her. Bailey meets an older woman across the street who seems more open-minded about her love of dresses. The lady has a sewing machine and wishes to make dresses, but lacks any ideas. So with each others help they create a dress with mirrors on it.
